What is Si Wu Tang?

Si Wu Tang, also known as Four Substance Decoction, is a Traditional Chinese Medicine formula primarily used to nourish and regulate the blood in cases of deficiency.

Its history dates back almost 900 years, first appearing in 1144 AD in the classic Tai Ping Huei Min Ho Chi Chu Fang.

What are the benefits of Si Wu Tang?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Si Wu Tang is often used for conditions involving blood deficiency and stagnation, including amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea and painful menstruation.

Si Wu Tang is also commonly used for anemia, chronic fatigue, and postpartum recovery. Some practitioners recommend it for autoimmune disorders and fertility issues, given its purported blood enriching properties.

What is the dosage and method for taking Si Wu Tang?

The generally recommended dosage of Si Wu Tang in capsule form is four capsules, two to three times daily; or as loose granules, 4.5 g mixed with hot water, 2-3 times per day. However, always follow your healthcare provider's instructions, as the dosage can vary based on your condition and response to treatment.

Please see What's the Recommended Dosage for Granule Herbs? for more information.

When can I expect to see results?

Si Wu Tang typically starts to take effect within days. However, like all treatments, its efficacy can vary from person to person.

Does Si Wu Tang have any side effects?

While Si Wu Tang is generally considered safe for most people, it can cause side effects in some individuals. Women who are pregnant, nursing, or postpartum as well as people with liver disease, should avoid or use Si Wu Tang with caution.

As with any Chinese herb, we recommend consulting with a qualified practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) about Si Wu Tang before any course of treatment is started.
