There is a signal your body sends continuously that most medicine does not know how to read. It is not a symptom. It is a conversation the nervous system is having with itself, available to anyone who learns the frequency.
Most people who arrive at Chorus have been told that what they are experiencing is anxiety, or fatigue, or stress. These descriptions are not wrong. They are also not complete. They describe the experience from the outside. The signal describes what is happening underneath it.
What the Brain Is Actually Doing
The brain operates across five distinct electrical frequency bands. Each corresponds to a specific state of the nervous system, and each state has a specific function.
Delta waves (0.5–4 Hz) dominate during deep sleep. This is the state in which the glymphatic system clears metabolic waste from the brain including amyloid proteins linked to neurodegeneration. It is also the state in which the deepest physical restoration occurs. The body requires this band every night to run its maintenance cycle.
Theta waves (4–8 Hz) arise at the edge of sleep, in deep relaxation, and in experienced meditators at rest. This is the frequency of imagery, intuition, and the kind of non-linear thinking that does not arrive through effort. Access to theta is one of the first capacities that sustained hypervigilance removes.
Alpha waves (8–12 Hz) are the signature of calm, present wakefulness alert without effort, open without alarm. People who have lived with sustained stress often describe losing access to a middle ground between activated and exhausted. Alpha is that middle ground. Its absence is not a personality trait. It is a measurable signal.
Beta waves (12–30 Hz) accompany active thinking, problem-solving, and engaged attention. This band is essential and healthy in appropriate measure. Under chronic stress, the nervous system gets locked into high-beta the frequency of sustained vigilance and cannot downshift. The person is not choosing to stay activated. The system has learned that downshifting is not safe.
Gamma waves (30–80 Hz) appear during peak cognitive integration and the particular quality of attention that contemplative traditions describe as clarity. They cannot be produced by will and arise only when the other bands are functioning correctly underneath them.
HRV: The Measure of Flexibility
Heart rate variability (HRV) is the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats. A high HRV means the interval changes fluidly, second to second, responding to the body's shifting demands. A low HRV means the interval has become fixed the system is locked in a pattern and cannot adapt.
HRV is not primarily a cardiac measurement. It is a measure of vagal tone: the activity of the vagus nerve, which governs the parasympathetic nervous system's capacity to respond flexibly to changing conditions. High vagal tone is the biological signature of a nervous system that can move between states alert when alertness is warranted, at rest when rest is warranted, responsive without being reactive.
It is also the signature of a system that is not stuck. The person with high HRV is not unaffected by stress. They recover from it. The interval returns. The system resets. That capacity for recovery is what low HRV measures the absence of.
Polyvagal theory (Porges, 2011) identifies HRV as the marker of what he calls the social engagement system the state in which digestion, immune function, deep sleep, and genuine connection with other people are all possible. It is not a luxury state. It is the state the body needs to run its maintenance systems. When HRV is chronically low, the body is spending its resources on vigilance and cannot free them for repair.
What Changes the Signal
A 2020 meta-analysis in Frontiers in Psychology covering 21 randomised studies found that mind-body practices breath-focused meditation, qigong, and slow movement significantly increased HRV, with medium-to-large effect sizes, across diverse populations. The long exhale specifically drives the effect: the ratio of exhalation to inhalation directly governs parasympathetic/sympathetic balance, and an exhale twice the length of the inhale shifts the balance within minutes. This is not a relaxation technique. It is a direct intervention in autonomic function.
A 2019 randomised controlled trial found that Ashwagandha at 240mg daily produced significant HRV improvement after 8 weeks, consistent with its mechanism of normalising HPA-axis activity and reducing baseline cortisol. The substrate and the practice work the same system from different angles.
EEG studies of people with sustained meditation practice show measurable increases in alpha and theta wave access, and corresponding decreases in default mode network activity the brain's narrative-generating circuit, which runs in overdrive in chronic stress and trauma-related states. The brain changes in response to consistent practice. The change is measurable. It is not metaphorical.
The signal your body has been sending is not a complaint to be managed. It is information about what the system needs. Reading it correctly is the beginning of responding to it correctly.
