A Clinician-Led Approach to Chronic Illness in Orange County
My Journey from Patient to Practitioner
By Dr. Joshua Park, DSOM, L.Ac. · Empowered You Acupuncture, Brea, CA

In his own words — Dr. Park on the recovery that became his life's work
If you live in Orange County and you're reading this, there's a reasonable chance you didn't land here by accident. You've probably tried the gastroenterologist. The elimination diets. The probiotics, the prescriptions, the protocols from podcasts. You may have been told some version of "this is just something you'll have to manage for the rest of your life." And somewhere inside, you've refused to accept that.
I know that feeling intimately. It's the same place I was standing fifteen years ago, and it's the reason Empowered You Acupuncture exists today.
This post is partly my story, partly an explanation of how we work with patients suffering from chronic digestive conditions like IBS, SIBO, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and GERD, and partly an invitation. If any of it resonates, keep reading to the end.
01
How I Ended Up in This Work
My path into East Asian Medicine was personal.
I was diagnosed with a chronic digestive illness and told plainly that I would have to suffer with it for the rest of my life. That answer was unacceptable to me. I'd been ill for over a year and a half. My world had shrunk to a size I no longer recognized.
I knew Traditional East Asian Medicine: acupuncture, herbal medicine, dietary therapy, and the broader system that sits behind them, had a long track record of treating chronic illness. So I went looking for someone who specialized in digestive health. In a remarkably short amount of time, that practitioner made an enormous difference in my quality of life. I recovered fully and durably.
The experience was so profound, and so transformative, that I knew I had found my life's work.
That's how I ended up practicing in Brea, treating patients from across Orange County — looking for the same kind of turning point I once needed.

Who We Help at Empowered You Acupuncture
Most of the patients who find their way to our Brea, CA clinic share a common pattern. They've been chronically unwell for years. They've cycled through specialists. They've spent thousands on tests, supplements, and protocols. They've often been told, sometimes kindly, sometimes not, that there's nothing more to do.
We are usually their last resort.
What's striking, and what continues to motivate me a decade into practice, is that even though we are the last resort, we are very frequently the intervention that finally moves the needle.
My clinical focus is chronic digestive and inflammatory conditions, including:
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
- Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)
- Ulcerative Colitis (UC)
- Crohn's Disease
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD)
- Chronic bloating, constipation, and dysbiosis
Because the gut is intimately tied to the rest of the body, we also see strong results in related chronic conditions that share underlying physiology: POTS, chronic viral infection and post-viral syndromes, migraines, peripheral neuropathy, and complex chronic pain. These conditions often cluster together in the same patients, and they respond well to the same comprehensive approach.
If you've been searching for an acupuncturist in Orange County who specializes in IBS, SIBO, or inflammatory bowel disease, this is the work we do every day.

What Treatment Actually Looks Like
How we practice is straightforward: every patient gets a comprehensive, doctor-designed treatment plan built around their specific condition. We don't work in single sessions, but in trajectories: months of carefully sequenced intervention aimed at durable, root-cause change.
A treatment plan at Empowered You Acupuncture typically integrates:
Acupuncture
used to regulate the nervous system, modulate inflammation, and restore communication along the gut-brain axis.
Custom herbal medicine
formulated for your specific pattern of dysfunction. Herbal medicine, in my experience, is where much of the deep, durable change happens. My work on regulating the gut-brain axis with herbal medicine, in collaboration with Dr. Erica Yang, DAcCHM, L.Ac, has been published in the integrative medicine journal Convergent Points.
Qigong
gentle, structured breathwork practices that train the body's regulatory systems and accelerate healing between visits.
Diet and lifestyle assessment
careful, individualized recommendations. Not a template. We look at what you eat, how you eat, when you sleep, how you move, and how your nervous system is functioning, and we adjust each variable with intention.
You'll notice what's not on that list. We don't focus on cupping or gua sha. Those have their place in some clinics, but they aren't central to the kind of deep, internal medicine work we do. We're not a spa-acupuncture clinic. We're a clinical practice for people with serious conditions.
04
What to Expect: The Treatment Timeline
When patients ask me how long this takes, I give them honest numbers based on what I've consistently seen across a decade of practice, including years spent inside major hospital systems like Memorial Healthcare System in South Florida, and currently UC Irvine Medical Center.
Around three months
Most patients experience durable, meaningful improvement. Symptoms that have plagued them for years begin to retreat. They sleep better. They eat without fear. They start to recognize themselves again.
Around six months
Many patients reach functional remission. The condition that ran their life is no longer running it.
Around nine months
We move beyond symptom resolution into what I think of as transcendence: lifestyle optimization, resilience building, and the kind of robust health that lets you do the things you love with the people you love, without your body holding you back.
This is not a quick-fix model. Chronic illness took years to build, and undoing it well takes time. But the trajectory is real and repeatable.

Why Patients Travel From All Over Southern California
Our clinic is located in Brea, in northern Orange County. We serve patients from Brea, Fullerton, Yorba Linda, La Habra, Placentia, and Anaheim Hills as their nearby option.
But some of our most committed patients drive in from Newport Beach, Irvine, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, and even Palm Springs. A few fly in.
I mention this not as a brag, but because it's relevant to your decision. The right practitioner for a complex chronic condition is worth driving for. Most of the patients who travel to see us have already exhausted closer options. They found that a comprehensive, doctor-led approach to chronic illness, rooted in East Asian Medicine and informed by hospital-based experience, was worth the trip.
If you're searching for IBS treatment in Orange County, SIBO treatment in OC, or a functional acupuncture clinic for chronic inflammatory conditions, distance shouldn't be the deciding factor; it should be fit.
06
What Recovery Actually Feels Like
There's a moment in nearly every successful case that I find profoundly moving.
When you've been chronically ill, whether it's a digestive illness, chronic pain, a complex post-viral condition, or any kind of chronic degenerative disease, your world shrinks. The number of things you can do becomes smaller and smaller. The restaurants you'll eat at. The trips you'll take. The events you'll commit to. The people you'll see. It's a quiet, daily narrowing that most healthy people don't fully understand.
The moment I'm describing is when that narrowing reverses. When a patient texts me that they ate the meal they were afraid of and felt fine. When they go on the trip they've been postponing for three years. When they pick up the hobby they gave up on. When their world starts to expand again.
That's why I do this work. There is nothing more gratifying to me than watching people get their lives back.
07
A Word If You're Still on the Fence
If you're someone living with a chronic illness in Orange County, I want to say this directly:
Don't lose hope.
I know how easy it is to internalize the message that this is just something you have to live with. That you've tried everything. That the condition is permanent and the goal now is management.
I disagree, and I have eight years of clinical evidence to back it up.
If you are at least open to the possibility of transformative change, you create an avenue for healing to arrive. Very often, you do not have to live with it. There are natural, evidence-informed, clinician-supervised interventions that can radically improve your quality of life and, in many cases, resolve the underlying dysfunction itself.
This isn't optimism. It's pattern recognition from doing this work, in a hospital and in private practice, for nearly a decade.
